My Experience at SIFT

July 26th, 2007

I remember when I applied to this program being so excited to be able to do a summer program for teaching at the college I have been interested in. This program wound up being very different from what I imagined, but it was different in a good way. I found out that I had to be very independent while staying here. I had to know when my classes were and when I had to leave in order to get to them on time. Getting to meals was the time where I had to make sure that I had at least ten minutes just to walk to the dining hall because it was all the way across campus. I have gotten used to the long walk over these past few weeks. I remember the first day walking with my mom to the dining hall wondering how I was going to walk that far every morning, afternoon, and evening.

I have made so many friends at this program and am sad about having to leave them all at the end of next week. It will be strange not seeing them every day of the week as I do at this program. I hope that I will be able to keep in touch with them after the program is over.

I have learned a lot about teaching with this program. I had many homework assignments and field experiences that helped me learn about the career of teaching. I really enjoyed going to an elementary school and working with the children. I also enjoyed teaching a lesson that I had created to my class at SIFT.

I have had a great experience at this program and will be sad to see it end. I will remember my experience at the Summer Institute for Future Teachers for a very long time and won’t soon forget the people I have met.

Why I want to be a teacher

July 10th, 2007

My name is Lauren, I’m going to be a junior in high school, and I have wanted to become a teacher ever since the sixth grade. My sixth grade teacher was the best teacher I have ever had. Her ability to educate us while also being our friend really inspired me to want to teach when I am older. When I went to middle school I was able to learn more about a career in teaching by joining the Young Educators Society. In this club I was able to meet people from other schools from the area surrounding my school. I also became close to the adjucator of the club and was able to  work with children at her summer program as a volunteer last year. The experience further increased my interest in being a teacher when I am older. I found it very fun to work with the children and help them learn new things. Doing this as a career would be wonderful. Even though I worked with young children at this summer program, I am more interested in teaching secondary education. My best subjects in school are Spanish and English, so I am considering teaching one of those subjects when I am older. I am more interested in Spanish at the moment because in college I would be able to study abroad.

I feel that I will be a good teacher because I have incredible patience and find it easy to give and explain directions to people. I also find it easy to cooperate with any type of person. My friends and my parents have all told me that I would make a great teacher, and I hope that they are correct. Right now I am participating at the Summer Institute for Future Teachers at ECSU in order to start my education in the field of teaching. I’m sure I am going to gain a great amount of knowledge from this program.
